Why Test Your Mouse or Trackpad?

Mouse and trackpad issues are frustrating and can seriously reduce productivity. Common problems include failing click switches, broken scroll wheels, and intermittent connection drops. Our test identifies these issues instantly:

  • Double-clicking — A single click registers as two clicks (worn microswitch)
  • Missing clicks — Button clicks don't always register
  • Scroll issues — Scroll wheel skips, reverses, or doesn't register
  • Side button failure — Forward/back buttons not working
  • Trackpad dead zones — Areas of the trackpad that don't respond to touch

What Our Test Checks

The mouse test provides visual feedback for every button and input:

  • Left click — Primary button, most critical to verify
  • Right click — Context menu button
  • Middle click — Scroll wheel button press
  • Scroll up/down — Wheel rotation in both directions
  • Side buttons — Forward and back navigation buttons
  • Click counter — Tracks total clicks to detect double-clicking issues

💡 Double-Click Detection

If your mouse is double-clicking, try rapid-fire clicking in our test and watch the click counter. If the count is consistently higher than your actual clicks, your mouse's microswitch is worn and may need replacing.

Common Mouse Issues & Fixes

Mouse double-clicking

The most common mouse issue. Caused by worn-out microswitches, typically after 1-2 years of heavy use. Solutions: adjust double-click speed in OS settings, use third-party debounce software, or replace the microswitch (DIY) or mouse.

Scroll wheel not working smoothly

Usually caused by dust or debris inside the scroll mechanism. Try blowing compressed air into the scroll wheel gap. For optical scroll wheels, clean the encoder with isopropyl alcohol.

Laptop trackpad issues

If your trackpad is unresponsive in certain areas, it may have a hardware fault. Check your trackpad settings to ensure tap-to-click and gestures are properly configured. Driver updates can also resolve many trackpad issues.

FAQ

Does this work with gaming mice?

Yes! All mouse buttons including side buttons, DPI switches, and scroll tilt are detectable. However, some gaming mouse software may intercept button presses — try disabling your mouse's companion software for the most accurate test.

Can I test my laptop's touchpad?

Yes. Trackpad clicks work the same as mouse clicks in the browser. Tap-to-click, two-finger right-click, and scroll gestures will all be detected by our test.
